Leavenworth County Residents May Qualify for Utility Assistance

In an effort to reduce some of the economic strain that result from high utility bills, the Leavenworth County Chapter of the American Red Cross has an opportunity to assist the working poor and those on fixed incomes who are struggling to pay these bills.

Project DESERVE

Through Project DESERVE applications are available to current Westar customers who meet the following criteria: (1) are over the age of 60; (2) are permanently disabled and receive SSI or SSD; (3) meet the income guidelines set forth in the application and (4) have not received Project DESERVE funds in the last calendar year.    The amount of assistance varies from $100 to $300, according to your qualifications.  Assistance can be provided only once during each calendar year.

You may receive an application by mail by calling the Leavenworth County Chapter at 913-682-6222.  Assistance is available in filling out this application or the LIEAP  (The Kansas Low Income Energy Assistance Program) application by calling the Chapter and scheduling an appointment. Project DESERVE must be postmarked between the 1st -7th of each month.

Other Energy Assistance Programs:

Currently the Leavenworth County Chapter does NOT have Emergency Food and Shelter Board Program Funds.  This program ends by the end of December and is usually not funded until at least March or April of the following year.  EF&SBP provides one month’s utility assistance for gas, electric, propane and water.  To qualify for the program you must provide verification of need.  Assistance can be provided only once during each fiscal year. Please contact us at 913-682-6222 to schedule an appointment.
