Every two minutes someone in our area needs blood, and the blood supply has to be constantly replenished.  Donated blood is usable for only 42 days, so volunteer donors are constantly needed to help save lives.  People who care about others are the only source for blood.  It can’t be manufactured, animal blood can’t replace it, and it costs nothing to give.

Most blood is used to treat cancer, heart and liver diseases, sickle-cell anemia and hemophilia.  The next biggest use is for emergency surgeries due to injuries.  Blood can be separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma; so many people can be helped with your single donation.

The blood you give saves the lives of as many as three people – people from our local community or across the country.  Countless others are still in need.  In the Missouri-Illinois Blood Region alone, which serves Leavenworth County, 1,200 American Red Cross blood donors are needed each day.  The only source of blood is through the life-saving gifts of volunteer donors.

What Exactly is the Blood Donation Process?

The actual blood donation only takes about 10-12 minutes, but you should allow about one hour from registration to refreshments.  It is a three-step process:

(2)   A brief health check will be conducted by a donor care specialist who will ask you some questions to protect you and the patient who receives your blood.
